The Problem With Fixed Setups in iRacing

Fixed setup series are the default recommendation for anyone starting out, and the reasoning is sound. They cost nothing. They need no preparation. You click join, you drive, and the car is the same as everyone else's, so whatever happens is about you.

This page argues that all of that is true and that it stops being enough sooner than most people think — not because the setups are bad, but because of what a numb car does to your ability to learn.

One disclosure first, because it matters for how you read the rest: I have an affiliation with a setup shop. There are no links to it here and none of this is a pitch to buy anything. If you take one action from this page it should be a free one.

What fixed setups genuinely get right

Let us not undersell them. A fixed series removes an entire dimension of the problem at the exact moment that dimension would drown you.

A new driver given setup freedom will spend their evenings changing springs instead of learning to brake, and they will get slower while feeling productive. Fixed removes that temptation completely. It also removes the arms race: nobody in the field has a setup advantage, so the results are a clean readout of driving.

They are free, they are instant, and they are a genuinely good place to start. This is not an argument against ever using them.

The inflection point

Here is the thing that does not get said: there is a point where the fixed setup starts costing you more than it saves.

It arrives earlier than the folk wisdom suggests. The common plan — I will stay on fixed until I get better, then move to open — sounds obviously correct and inverts the moment you examine the mechanism.

Why a numb car is hard to learn in

Learning a technique is a feedback loop. You make an input, the car responds, you feel the response, and you adjust. Remove any link in that chain and you are not practising, you are repeating.

A fixed setup has to be driveable by the entire field, from a rookie to an alien, in one configuration. The only balance that satisfies that constraint is a safe one: stable, forgiving, and reluctant to rotate. That is the right engineering answer for a field and it is a poor teaching aid, because the car's response to your input is exactly what has been damped out.

So the beginner trailing the brake into a corner feels almost nothing happen. The correct conclusion is "this car does not rotate much". The conclusion they actually reach is "I am doing this wrong". They change something that was right, it also produces no feedback, and they wander further from the technique while working hard.

That is the real cost, and it is not lap time. It is a driver who cannot tell whether their technique is working, and therefore cannot improve it.

You do not have to take a beginner's word for this. In a season where a widely disliked fixed configuration was in rotation, drivers at four, five and six thousand iRating were publicly describing the cars as inherently understeering and unwilling to rotate no matter what technique they applied. If drivers with that much experience cannot make the car answer them, a driver learning trail braking for the first time has no chance of reading the result.

About the incident data

There is a claim in circulation that fixed series crash more than open ones, and it is worth being precise about what the numbers actually support.

iRacing publishes incidents-per-corner figures by series, where lower is better. Two comparisons:

  • GT3: an open GT sprint series at 0.026 against a fixed GT3 series at 0.033 — meaningfully worse, roughly a quarter more incidents per corner.
  • Porsche Cup: open at 0.047 against fixed at 0.048 — which is no difference at all.

So the honest version is narrower than the claim: one comparison shows a real gap and the other shows none. Anyone telling you the data proves fixed racing is dirtier is overstating it.

These are also not controlled comparisons. Different series carry different cars, different licence classes and different fields, and any of those explains an incident-rate difference at least as well as the setup rule does. The plausible mechanism — that open series attract drivers who have already spent practice time in the car, and a field that practised is a field that races more cleanly — is believable, and it is not established by these numbers.

Treat the incident argument as a secondary reason at most. The learning argument below stands on its own.

You have more control inside a fixed series than you think

This is the part most people miss, and it costs nothing.

"Fixed" does not mean every parameter is locked. In most fixed series you can still adjust the in-car controls — ABS, traction control, and brake bias — and those are not trivial. Bias in particular is one of the few genuine performance levers left open to you, and it is the one that most changes how the car behaves under braking.

The short version: if you brake hard and keep locking the fronts or triggering ABS, moving the bias rearward will help. If the car feels like it wants to come around under braking, moving it forward will settle it. Which direction suits you is a property of your braking style, not of the car.

Do this and the fixed setup stops being one-size-fits-all. It is still conservative, but it is conservative in a way that suits you, and that is a real improvement in feel for zero cost and zero rule-breaking.

So should you move to open setups?

Eventually, and probably sooner than you planned. But be careful what you take from that, because there is a version of this advice that is wrong.

Moving to open setups does not mean buying setups. Our iRacing guide makes the case that you should not be paying for setups early, and that is still right — below a certain level the limiting factor is you, and a purchased setup mostly buys you a car you cannot yet exploit and cannot diagnose.

The two positions fit together once you separate the question. Do you need to buy a setup to be fast? No. Is a locked, deliberately damped car the best environment to learn technique in? Also no. The resolution is a car that responds to you, obtained for free:

  • Adjust what the fixed series already lets you adjust. Bias first. Costs nothing, changes plenty.
  • Use free community setups. They exist for most popular cars and are usually far more communicative than the fixed baseline.
  • Change one thing at a time in an open series. Not to find lap time — to learn what each change feels like. A click of wing, a small spring change. The point is the association between input and sensation.

The goal is not a faster setup. It is a car that answers you, so that when you practise a technique you can tell whether it worked.

The short version

Fixed setups are a good place to start and a bad place to settle. They are free, fair and simple, and they buy that simplicity by damping out exactly the responsiveness you need in order to feel whether your technique is working.

If you are stuck on a plateau while practising diligently, it is worth considering that the car may be hiding your progress from you rather than that you have stopped making any. Change the brake bias first, since it is free and available today. If the car suddenly starts talking to you, that tells you something about the last few months.

And if the plateau turns out to be technique after all, that is a good thing to have established — why your lap times are inconsistent is the better page for that case.

What is the difference between fixed and open setup series in iRacing?

In a fixed series every driver runs the same locked baseline setup, so results reflect driving alone and nobody needs to prepare a car. In an open series you bring your own, whether you built it, downloaded it or was given it. Open series therefore attract drivers who have already spent practice time in the car, which tends to raise both the pace and the standard of racecraft in the field.

Are fixed setups good for beginners in iRacing?

They are a good place to start and a poor place to stay. Fixed removes an entire dimension of the problem at the moment it would overwhelm you, and it stops you spending evenings changing springs instead of learning to brake. The limit is that the baseline has to remain driveable for an entire field, so it is deliberately damped, and that same damping hides the car's response to the technique you are practising.

Why does a fixed setup car feel numb and refuse to rotate?

Because it has to be driveable by everyone in the series in one configuration, and the only balance that satisfies that is a stable, forgiving, rotation-shy one. That is sound engineering for a field and unhelpful for learning: the response you would use to judge whether your input worked is exactly what has been damped out. It is a property of the compromise, not evidence that you are driving badly.

Should I stay on fixed setups until I get faster?

It sounds logical and the mechanism works against you. Learning a technique is a feedback loop of input, response, sensation, adjustment, and a damped car breaks the response link, so you repeat rather than practise. A driver trailing the brake in a numb car feels nothing happen and concludes they are doing it wrong, then changes something that was already right. You do not need to buy anything to fix this.
