Sim Racing Upgrade Order: What Should You Upgrade First?
There is no universal sim racing upgrade order, and the lists that give you one — rig, then pedals, then wheelbase, then screens — are answering a question nobody actually has. You do not own nothing. You own something, and one part of it is holding the rest back.
So the order is not a shopping list. It is a diagnosis: upgrade whatever is currently stopping the hardware you already own from doing its job. If your chair slides back when you brake hard, a better brake pedal will not fix your braking — it will just move more accurately while you move too. If the rig is solid and your braking is still inconsistent, pedals are the answer. If both are fine and you cannot feel what the front tyres are doing, that is when a wheelbase starts to matter.
What should you upgrade first in sim racing?
Upgrade the part of your setup that is currently preventing the rest from working. In practice that means: if anything moves while you drive — seat, pedal tray, wheel mount — fix that first, because no component above it can be repeatable on a platform that shifts. If nothing moves and your braking varies lap to lap, upgrade pedals. If braking is already repeatable and the wheel is not telling you what the front tyres are doing, upgrade the wheelbase. Displays, ergonomics and haptics come after all three.
Find your row, buy that thing, and ignore the rest until it becomes true.

Before you spend anything, three fixes that cost nothing
A large share of "I need better hardware" is really "my current hardware is set up badly". These three are free, they take an evening, and doing them first stops you buying a component to solve a problem you could have solved with a slider.
Correct your field of view
Almost everyone runs an FOV that is too wide, because a correct one feels uncomfortably zoomed-in at first. The cost is that speed and distance stop being readable — you brake early because you genuinely cannot tell how fast you are closing. Fix your seating position
Pedal angle, seat height and distance decide whether your leg can deliver the same pressure twice. If it cannot, that is not a pedal problem yet. The seating position guide covers the geometry.
Check whether your force feedback is clipping
This one matters most, because clipping feels like a hardware limitation. When the signal is turned up past what the wheel can express, the peaks flatten — and the peaks are exactly where the information about the grip limit lives. You end up with a wheel that feels strong and tells you nothing, which is precisely the sensation that makes people buy a new one. Check yours against the force feedback settings reference first.
If anything moves, fix that before anything else
This is the part most upgrade guides get wrong, and it comes from watching a friend go the whole way: wheel clamped to a desk, then a folding seat, then load cell pedals, then a better wheel, and finally a full aluminium profile rig.
The best upgrade in that entire sequence was the rig. Not the pedals. Not the wheelbase.
The reason is that flex is not a comfort problem, it is a measurement problem. When you press the brake and the chair rocks backwards, the pressure your foot applies and the pressure the pedal receives stop being the same number. Fix the chair and the pedals shift slightly instead. Either way, the same effort produces a different result each lap, and you cannot build muscle memory on top of a surface that keeps changing the answer.
Worse, you will not know it is happening. Flex does not announce itself — it just quietly caps how consistent you are able to be, and you attribute the inconsistency to yourself. Most people only notice once they have driven something rigid.
So the foundation is a platform with close to zero flex, and every later decision is made in service of keeping it that way.
The uncomfortable version of this
Here is the part that argues with the standard advice: a worse pedal that does not move can beat a better pedal that does.
A potentiometer pedal measures travel rather than force, and yes, that makes high-pressure consistency harder than it would be with a load cell. But if you are bolted down and your body is not moving, you get the same travel for the same input every single time. Repeatability is what actually converts into lap time. A load cell mounted to something that flexes gives you a more precise reading of a less repeatable action.
That is not an argument against load cells. It is an argument about order. Buy the stability first and the pedal upgrade gets to show you its full value later.
Pedals, once the rig is solid
When nothing moves and your braking is still the inconsistent part of your lap, pedals are the correct next purchase — and braking is usually the right place to spend, because it is the input with the least margin. Steering has a wide band of acceptable answers. Brake pressure at the limit does not.

Do not make the pedal harder — change what it does under load
The common instinct is to make the brake as stiff as possible, on the theory that a rock-hard pedal is more precise. In practice, a pedal you have to fight will move you. Even bracing against it, you shift in the seat, and you are back to the flex problem you just spent money solving.
What you actually want is not more resistance but a change in behaviour partway through the press — something that lets you feel two distinct stages of braking rather than treating the pedal as an on-off switch. Combining elements with different characteristics does this: a spring that compresses through the first phase, then a stiffer element that takes over for the second. You get the sensation of squeezing into the brake, and the useful part of that feeling arrives without needing enough force to unseat you.
That is a modification and a settings exercise, not necessarily a purchase. It is worth trying before you conclude the pedal is the limit.
Wheelbase, when force feedback is genuinely the limitation
A wheelbase upgrade is justified when your pedals are repeatable, your rig is solid, your FFB is configured properly, and the wheel still is not telling you what the front tyres are doing. All four conditions. If any of them is unmet, a stronger base will make the missing information louder rather than clearer.
One thing to check before you buy: the wheel itself must not move. A base mounted to a flexing plate or a desk fights you with its own mounting rather than with the car, and no amount of torque fixes that.
Less force feedback might be faster
This is a personal position rather than a settled fact, and it is worth stating as one — plenty of very fast drivers run enormous force feedback and are not slowed by it. But it is worth testing on yourself.
If you can still feel the same events at a lower strength, lower is likely to be faster, because you react more quickly with hands that are not braced against the wheel. Fighting the force costs you reaction time and reintroduces movement into a rig you deliberately made rigid. The condition attached to it matters, though: this only holds if you are not losing detail. Turning the strength down until the car goes quiet is not the same thing.
The useful experiment is to reduce strength gradually while checking whether you can still detect the front losing grip. The point where that starts to disappear is your floor.
Display, when visibility is what you are missing
Screens are the upgrade people buy first for immersion and last for lap time, which is roughly backwards. If you genuinely cannot see the apex before you turn in, or cannot see a car that is halfway alongside, that is not immersion — that is missing information, and you are driving without it.
Fix the FOV first, because a correct one on the screen you own changes more than most people expect. If you are still short of visibility after that, the monitor setup visualizer will show you what single, ultrawide and triple screens actually change, which is more useful than a specification list.
Haptics, motion and accessories — the cherry on top
Bass shakers, transducers and motion do not fundamentally change how you drive. They change how much you enjoy it, which is a legitimate reason to buy something, and worth being honest about rather than dressing up as performance.
The one way to get this wrong is overloading a single unit. If you have one transducer and you assign it ten effects, everything blurs into undifferentiated rumble and you learn nothing from any of it. One to three effects per unit, kept distinct, is worth far more than a full spectrum crammed into one channel.

The upgrade decision tree, in order
- Does anything move while you drive — seat, pedals, wheel mount? → rig and mounting. Stop here.
- No movement. Is your brake pressure repeatable lap to lap? → if not, pedals.
- Braking is repeatable. Have you checked FOV, seating and FFB clipping? → if not, do those three first. They are free.
- All three checked. Can you feel the front tyres losing grip through the wheel? → if not, wheelbase.
- You can feel it. Can you see the apex, and cars alongside you? → if not, display and FOV.
- Everything above is true → haptics, motion, accessories. You are buying enjoyment now, which is a fine thing to buy on purpose.
Work down the list and stop at the first "no". That is your next purchase, regardless of what you were planning to buy.
Upgrade paths for common starting setups
The tree above is the general case. These are the three most common places people actually start from, and what the order usually looks like from each. The principle does not change — it is still stability, then repeatability, then information — but the first step differs depending on what you already have.
Logitech G29 or G923
Usually clamped to a desk with the pedals loose on carpet, which makes mounting the first move by a wide margin. Get the wheel and pedals fixed to something that does not shift, then dial in the deadzone and brake curve on the pedals you already own. Only after both of those does a load cell start returning what it costs — and at that point it returns a lot, because the stock brake is travel-based and you will have hit its ceiling. Wheelbase comes after pedals here, not before.
Thrustmaster T300 or similar belt-driven base
Same sequence, different emphasis. The base is already good enough to teach you a great deal, so the temptation to replace it early is the trap. Stability first, pedals second, and leave the wheelbase alone until you can honestly say your braking is repeatable and you are still missing information rather than strength.
An entry-level direct drive setup
If you already own a modern entry DD, your wheelbase is very unlikely to be your limitation, and it is almost certainly not the thing to upgrade next. The usual weak links are the rig it is bolted to and the pedals underneath it, in that order. After those, display and FOV will do more for your lap time than more torque will.
Pedals or wheelbase: which should you buy first?
The most common version of this question, and the honest answer is that it depends on which one you have already outgrown.
Pedals first when your mounting is solid and braking is the inconsistent part of your lap — you lock up occasionally, or your brake pressure varies between laps that should be identical.
Wheelbase first when your braking is already repeatable and what you are missing is information: the front washes wide and the first you know about it is visual rather than something you felt building.
And neither, if anything is still moving. That case is not a tie-break, it is a different purchase entirely.
What makes this worth thinking about rather than defaulting is that "pedals always first" is advice built for someone starting from nothing. You are not. If you have already got good pedals bolted to a rigid rig, repeating the rule buys you nothing.

Does sim racing hardware actually make you faster?
Some of it does, in one specific way: it removes limits. A rig that does not move lets you be as consistent as your technique allows. A load cell lets you brake by force rather than by distance. A correct FOV lets you judge closing speed. None of that teaches you anything — it stops the equipment from capping what you already know.
Which means the ceiling is nearly always further away than people assume. Drivers reach a very high level on modest equipment, and the path there is technique, not procurement — which is the whole argument of how to actually get better at sim racing.
So the last item in the upgrade order is the one nobody sells: if you are not sure whether hardware or technique is the thing holding you back, do not buy anything yet. Work out which it is. If your lap times swing around without an obvious cause, the causes of inconsistency is a better place to start than a checkout page — and roughly half of what is on that list costs nothing to fix.
Simplicity is the thread through all of it. A stable platform where you can repeat your inputs is worth more than any single expensive component sitting on top of one that moves.

Should I upgrade my monitor or wheelbase first?
